Lancaster Students: Research Projects

The SCC Group typically takes on two MChem project students (CHEM400) and two BSc project students (CHEM381) per year. The module convenor will make available project outlines in April, for projects starting in October. You are strongly encouraged to come and chat to me/my group informally before submitting your project choices if you are interested in working with us.

Undergraduate Projects/Visiting Students

Are you a UK student interested in doing a summer project with us? Then the Royal Society of Chemistry Undergraduate Research Bursaries are for you! These are for a 6-8 week research project during the summer vacation (limited to students in the middle years of their course – first/final year students are not eligible). The deadline is usually mid-February for projects in the summer of the same year. If you are interested, contact Susannah in January at the latest to allow time to prepare the application.

Are you outside the UK, studying on a degree programme accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry? You are eligible to apply for the Royal Society of Chemistry International Student Bursaries! These are for a 6-10 week research project during the summer break (limited to students in the penultimate year of their course). The deadline is usually mid-February for projects in the summer of the same year. If you are interested, contact Susannah in January at the latest to allow time to prepare the application.

Other opportunities for short-term placements (e.g. for visiting students) may be available, although please note that we cannot guarantee funding for such visits. If you are able to apply for funding yourself, please contact Susannah well in advance of the closing date with details of the envisaged funding scheme.

Ph.D. and Postdoc Opportunities

Funded Ph.D. studentships and postdoctoral positions will be advertised here and through a variety of other channels. If no funded positions are available, Susannah is happy to receive speculative applications from talented, motivated and hard-working students at any time, and will keep your details on file until funding becomes available. Please contact Susannah by email, sending your CV and a covering letter detailing why you would like to join the group (please note that generic mass applications that do not contain this covering letter will not receive a response). PhD positions will generally commence in October of each year, although other starting points may be possible depending on when funding is secured.

If you are eligible and willing to apply for external funding, please contact Susannah well in advance of the closing date for the appropriate scheme – you will be offered extensive assistance in the preparation of your application. Examples of suitable schemes (not exhaustive!) are listed below:
